The Cradle Will Rock
On the night of the premiere of The Cradle Will Rock in 1937, the producers suddenly forbade the performance due to fears over its controversial text. Undaunted, the playwright, composer, and cast found a theatre, led a waiting audience there, and improvised a skeletal version of the play that electrified the audience. Though the musical was penned during the Depression era, society continues to play and replay its story today: the clash between the business mogul and those seeking equitable treatment for workers who toil within the corporate sphere.
