The fires in Los Angeles, CA have brought more attention to the plight of incarcerated prisoners who are crucial to California’s firefighting departments. While California is far from the only state to utilize prison slave labor, we will utilize it as a case study for a nation-wide problem affecting people in the prison system. We will also discuss California’s recent passing of Proposition 6, which maintains California’s ability to use slave labor in prisons, and what this means for the abolition movement.
