Holding Onto Your OARS: Review and Application of Effective Communication Skills That Help Students In Distress (Leading Self)

Monday, September 28, 2026 4:00pm to 5:00pm EDT

Has a student in distress ever approached you to seek help after a traumatic event, but you weren't sure how to lead the conversation? Unsure of how to guide them to the right, safe resource? Just like boat oars used to navigate waters, effective skills are needed to navigate conversations with students after a crisis. During this program, Alex Kabat from the Advocacy Center of Tompkins County and Ithaca College's Coordinator of Student Conduct Nick Schaack will go over the OARS framework (open-ended questions, affirming, reflecting, and summarizing) that has been applied in many counseling and helping contexts--especially college campuses like Ithaca College. Nick and Alex will share their expertise related to OARS skills, how they benefit helping students, survivors and victims, and resources available to all students in the Advocacy Center and here at IC. Interactive discussion, case study review, and reflection will be led as a way to apply this content and learn how you could use OARS skills to make a difference in the Ithaca College campus community as a developing student leader and beyond.
