Women Leaders Series: Margaret Thatcher - Political and Hegemonic Masculinity (Leading in a Diverse World)

This presentation focuses on the political journey of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her relationship with hegemonic masculinity. It will show Thatcher's transformation into a hyper-masculine national figure through image transformation and engagement in the Falklands War. Topics will also include the "Thatcher, Thatcher, Milk Snatcher" controversy, the sinking of the Argentine ship ARA General Belgrano, and depictions of Thatcher in popular culture. The presentation will help participants understand the effect of masculine political institutions on women in government. The presentation will, in part, focus on the Falklands War and may be uncomfortable / triggering for people with a personal relationship with the conflict.
